Watch Brands that provide best value for money

Post by kaloksi on 2013-02-17, 18:31

Which ones do you think are the best watch brands out there that provide value for money?

I have just found this brand at ebay that seems to be offering an interesting diver/pilot watch for what looks to be a fair price for a watch featuring a Seagull ST2130.

Design does not look original but sure looks interesting

http://www.borealiswatch.com/product/borealis-automatic-pilot-diver-watch-300-meters-water-resistant-with-seagull-st2130-eta-2824-2-clone-movement/

Let me know your thoughts and if you think better options around.

Thanks

I think Precista represents Big Bang for the buck. Tsunami as well, many Seikos and Gshocks.

Seiko, citizen,Hamilton, Raymond Weil. If you look in the pre owned market it gets much larger and if you look in the vintage make sure you can do the service or can afford to do it.

Howdy, and welcome to the forum. I'm a fan of Accutron, Christopher Ward, Hamilton, Citizen, Seiko, Orient and Pulsar. All of them make an excellent product, and most of them make pieces that cover just about everyone's price range. But, as Ocean notes above, factor in maintenance and repair costs into the equation; you'll be glad you did... Hope you enjoy your time with us...! What a Face

Orient fan myself. Also, looking into picking up a Bernhardt myself.

Also, welcome to WF.

Why buy something that is a completely unknown entity? Even if it is a decent Seagull movement, it doesn't mean that it will be properly assembled, regulated, or, cased up. It doesn't mean that the case is well made, that the dial wont fade or crackle after a year, that the hands won't fall off; well I guess you get the idea. I recently bought this watch from eddiea: Hamilton Khaki QNE

I paid $350 shipped and insured. New it would have cost me $600-$750 on the net; the current retail is $1000 following a price increase just after the first of the year. The watch is Swiss Made, has an excellent ETA movement, and everything else you'd expect to find in a great Swiss watch built to last. By obtaining this Hammy from a guy like eddie, I got a watch in brand new condition, the boxes, papers etc., for 1/3 of retail on a watch that the discount houses generally offer only a 30% discount on.

The forums have feedback on sellers, so you know who you're dealing with, and through purchasing pre-owned, you can really stretch your financial legs and pick up really nice watches. If you want to buy new, buy tried and true brands. Seiko, Orient and Citizen/Miyota make their own mechanical/auto/quartz movements, put them in good homes, and can be purchased new in your stated price range. Hamilton, Mido and Tissot are excellent Swiss brands who make watches in a broad affordable price range. Scour the discount sites- Jomashop, World of Watches and Amazon are reputable, highly competitive and often have blow-out sales that put Swiss in, or, very near your price range and offer the best prices on Japanese and Chinese brands as well. Whatever you buy, don't spend your hard earned money on crap. Happy hunting

Can't go wrong with that particular watch; it is a looker, and works well for any/all occasions...long-story-short, it kicks arse!

Respectable specs for the dollars and the ST-21 is a movement with a quite decent track record. Plus: the watch you're pointing to does look stylish and very solid.

And everybody is correct to point you to Seiko, Orient and Citizen, and also very correct to note that the used market opens up a huge range of very good quality watches at your price point.

All that said, it's your wrist and the watch -- whatever it is -- should bring a smile to your face, should make you feel good about yourself when you wear it, or it's not right for you regardless of cost or brand.

Agreed. My point was, how that movement is handled by a third party can make a great deal of difference, and that a good movement alone does not a good watch make. Looks can be deceiving and inferior quality in some aspect of the watch may not become apparent until long after the return period is over, especially on ebay. I think caution is indicated with no way to know if the manufacturer will stand behind a watch, or, should a problem develop down the road, if they're even going to still be in business altogether and not just leave ya singin' the blues. Wink A company's track record is important to me before I lay out hard earned skins on a watch, or, any product for that matter.

I'll drink to that! Nothing makes me feel better than getting something I think looks cool, that's well made, for an awesome price!

Fully agreed. Which is, for instance, why I don't buy watches from mushroom manufacturers generally, which is to say: I don't unless I'm fully willing to take the risk.

When did the guy from Bones start making watches?

Seriously, with their in-house movement, I'd say Orient is the biggest bang for the buck, but as other have posted, there's a lot to choose from
