I forgot all about this watch! I had wrapped it in bubble wrap and shoved it in the back of my dresser. This thread jogged my memory so I took some quick shots for you guys. I bought this piece of fucking garbage from one of those chinese replica sites with a prepaid credit card (so they wouldn't drain my real account) for $60 just to see how bad it was. ...... It's bad. The dial has the hour markers painted on by hand (perhaps by michael j fox?) instead of the signature pam sandwich dial. The movement is an automatic that looks like it's made of scrap aluminum. The strap is made of god knows what. Maybe cat leather? But it's unbearably stiff and stamped "luminor panerai" even though it's a radiomir replica.

The only positives are the crystal has a nice serving of anti reflective coating and the movement actually keeps pretty decent time (i shit you not).

That's definitely the right idea. With the money I spent on it plus shipping, I could of had a nice custom ammo leather strap for one of my more respectable watches.

I'm up for suggestions on what to do with this shamerai. I'll even record the proceedings and post them here.

I dunno. Sell it to the unsuspecting, then apply what you get to a Springfield XD .45 acp or something similar.

I had a 'Patek' that was in a large box of miscellany that I bought at an estate sale for ten bucks; it was an excellent fake, with a whisper smooth automatic three-hand movement that lost about 7 seconds per month, an amazingly ornate stainless case, and a dial that was an incredibly detailed duca white. The dead giveaway was the otherwise gorgeous, cote de geneve-decorated rotor with "Pateh Philippe" engraved along the bottom edge. No

The estate sale box was not a total loss, as it also had two genuine Orises and a strange-looking (but genuine) little accutron electric watch. This was well before I became a [nominal] WIS, so the three real watches were quickly sold. And the PP? UGH...don't ask... Suspect Friggin' thing.

Ed I agree with you. So many fakes out there that it isn't even funny anymore.

I had a fake, used Rolex (quartz, no less, that looked like a Sub) that I borrowed and "gifted" to a friend as a joke before presenting him with a real watch. I went to give it back to its owner, who told me to jsut throw it out. I didn't, but it stopped not long after; when I opened the case back the entire thing just disintegrated. It, as it always should have been, ended up with the fish bones and gum wrappers.

Fake Swiss Watches Reach New Levels of Sophistication

Swiss Crackdown on Fake Watches

The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry told swissinfo.ch this week that fake Swiss watches from China are more difficult to spot than ever. Long gone are the days when you could tell a fake by obvious imperfections such as a poorly aligned dial or cheap materials. Now even a replica's wristband is picture perfect and you might need a magnifier to spot a microscopic fault.

"The counterfeiters have now mastered ultra-complex movements,” says Michel Arnoux, head of the anti-counterfeiting unit of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.

This kind of counterfeiting does far more than diminish a brand's appeal.

“Counterfeiting costs the watchmaking industry billions each year,” Nick Hayek, head of Swatch Group, recently told the 20 Minuten newspaper. “The worst thing about it is that these copies are being made more and more professionally.”

Demand has driven counterfeiting but so has a policy of restrictive supply.

To combat the growing threat, the industry federation now has a team of 50 Chinese inspectors on the ground but its unclear if they will have much impact or the authority to stop the contagion.

The closest I came to owning one was early on in my watch collecting I picked up a Getat sterile dial PAM ripoff. Learned that I could never be satisfied by an "homage".

Fakes are the only reason I've hesitated to pick up a Rolex.
