Cool story eddie. One of my heros is Col. Joe Kittenger who did this from 19 miles up back in 1960 when NASA was still using slide rules :-/

Kittinger is on Baumgartners team, in fact. I am very interested in this because it may yield useful data for astronauts/pilots.

They don't use slide rules anymore...? Damn... All kidding aside, the Joe Kettinger story was required reading 100 years ago when I was in basic flight training. The term 'ballsy' was made for guys like that, and I idolized him, too. But this new guy? Oy, shmeckus in the head, he has!
Great posts, gentlemen; thanks...

Sliderules serve many purposes, from calculate currency exchange to calculating gas consumption, speed and distance, in the past pilots like Amelia Earhart rely on the sliderule , today days, if all electronics fail for whatever reason, the sliderule is a must have.
Here is what I wearing today 10-09-2012 (with a multi-function sliderule.)
Aviator sliderule...
Mechanical aviator sliderule (like the Zenith)

I have the Chase-Durer version, and it works like a charm...and it's very photogenic, as you can see above.

i know what a slide rule is, it was a lame attempt to make fun of them. Believe it or not i even know how to use one, and an abacus as well.

Thank you sir, an excerpt of a mini review.. I made a while back.Mortuus wrote:Forgot to mention it, Eddie, but that Hammy is amazing...any particulates you can share about it?
The Aviation style Hamilton's Khaki QNE watch features a 316 fine brushed 44mm case stainless steel construction on a sapphire crystal, the Champagne/Antique Ivory dial (in my piece)is featuring a pressure-altitude measurement scale (mmHg/hPa pressure scale)for those of you into reading very small numbers and in need to calculate your altitude say… at lunch time, for the rest of us, is always a conversation piece … a date window completes the dial... The split window exhibition case back features a Zulu aviation alphabet reference list… Lug size is a healthy 22mm and the piece is rated 100meters water resistant with a signed, non screwing down crown . The movement is a modified ETA 2892-2 with 6 extra jewels 27 total ( ETA 2895-2 )for the separate small second hand sub-dial complication locate at 6 on the main dial, reminiscent of those old airplane gauges…. no fine finish applied to the movement (not expected either in this price range) other than the Hamilton name across the rotor.

Many thanks, Eddie; some very good reading about a watch I wish I could have had back in my 'nasal radiator' days...

My grandfather taught me as a child. He also taught me morse code as he was an ASA (Army Security Agency, precursor to the NSA) communications specialist during the korean war. He said his job at one point was to "spy" on code being sent by the russians, even though we were allies.

This thing is rescheduled for today (Sunday). Right now it is being live streamed here
http://www.redbullstratos.com/live?tag=contentMain;contentBody
It is also supposed to be televised live on Discovery. It appears they are waiting for a light wind to die down at the moment so they can launch.
EDIT: Inflating the balloon now.

"What do you do, where do you go, the day after you save the universe?" - Unknown, found penciled on the built-in cork board of a study carrel at the USN Aviation Officer Candidate School, Pensacola, FL.
Sort of appropos, I guess...
