My Grandfather's Watch

Post by AJC on 2012-08-20, 08:44

I moved in with my grandmother after she had a stroke to help her with everyday activities. She has picked up on my preoccupation with wristwatches and has started to show some interest herself. She came out this morning with my late grandfather's watches and told me if I wanted them, I could have them. He worked at GM for 40+ years until parkinson's disease forced him to retire. The only one I found worth speaking of was the one that still had it's original box. A goldtone Seiko quartz from October 1983 (one year before I was born oct 84)

It needed a new battery and I swapped the hair-pulling bracelet out with a nice mahogany leather strap and I love it. It looks like it's never been worn, the luminous dots & hands still glows nicely, even the "inspected by JWCII" sticker was in place on the caseback. I know it's from 1983 because this model wasn't available in 1973 and the JWCII disbanded in 1991.

It has a cool textured dial and applied "SEIKO" and "SQ" logos, stainless steel day/date wheels, and it is really in incredible condition for a 29 year old watch.

Here's a couple pics:

That looks just plain awesome, AJ, and what a super cool way to remember your grandad... Perfect strap choice, too...What a Face

Oh, and BTW: you're a damned fine man to step in and haelp your grandmother like this. Being a Caregiver is one of the toughest jobs out there, and what you've done is above and beyond, sir... Cool
